The show is based on George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, which tells the history of House Targaryen, the family that ruled the Seven Kingdoms before the events of Game of Thrones. The series will feature a large and talented cast, including Paddy Considine as King Viserys I Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, and Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen. The show is being produced by a team of experienced and talented writers, directors, and producers, and it promises to be just as epic and exciting as Game of Thrones. Since starring opposite one of the biggest pop stars in the world, Glynn-Carney has continued to carve out a niche for himself. He played Christopher Wiseman in the Nicholas Hoult-starring biopic "Tolkein," and he played Hotspur in "The King," a medieval epic that also starred Robert Pattinson and Timothee Chalamet.

Why House of the Dragon Will Feel So Different from Game of Thrones

Emily Carey has made quite the career for herself playing the younger version of major characters. In the 2018 adaptation of "Tomb Raider," she played the 12-year-old version of Alicia Vikander's Lara Croft. Carey added that she'd love to return to the Amalfi Coast to explore her surroundings more. "I'd love to go back as I was twelve at the time and wasn't really interested in the culture of the place," she recalled. "I was like, 'The sun is out. Yeah! Can we go to the pool?' Whereas, I would love to go back and indulge in the culture." Most recently, audiences on both sides of the Atlantic fell in love with the veteran actor as the main character's father in "Fleabag," (who gets married to Olivia Coleman's Godmother character).

Larys is played by Matthew Needham, who has had small roles in Chernobyl, Sherlock, and Doctor Who. "Jace" is Rhaenyra and Laenor Velaryon's firstborn son, though it is heavily suspected that he (and his brother, Lucerys) were actually Ser Harwin Strong's children. Jacaerys stands to inherit the Iron Throne after Rhaenyra and works hard to ensure he will be a respected ruler when the time comes.

Steven Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon

The Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, is all about the rise and fall of House Targaryen. The series is set about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and who will sit on the Iron Throne remains a constant battle. He told Variety at the show's premiere in Los Angeles that everything really hit him at the first rehearsal, when he looked around the table and saw the caliber of actors he would be starring alongside. She's right that "House of the Dragon" is the biggest thing much of the cast has starred in thus far in their careers. Still, they are almost all acting vets who have been around a while, even if not at this level. That means you may be wondering why some of them look familiar while you're enjoying the show. Well, fear not and read on, because we've got a breakdown of why you might recognize all the major players vying for the Iron Throne.

How House of the Dragon Is Approaching the Game of Thrones Ending Backlash

Blondell was born in Sweden and worked in Swedish television and as a VJ for MTV Sweden early in her career. She's best known for her role in Marvel's Black Widow, and she hosts a podcast where she highlights non-white Swedish women, called Fenomenala kvinnor (Phenomenal Women). The daughter of Corlys and Rhaenys, Laena is introduced as a 12-year-old noble (and potential bride for King Viserys) early in the show. She's later present at the wedding of her brother Laenor and Rhaenyra, where she gets flirty with Daemon. She's played by Foueillis-Mose at age 12 and Steyn (seen above) at age 15. London-born actress and model Carey made her stage debut when she was nine, landing roles in UK productions of Shrek the Musical and The Sound of Music.

Phil Daniels is best known for his iconic lead role in the film Quadrophenia and also for his turn as Kevin Wicks in EastEnders. Daniels has also appeared in The Class of Miss MacMichael, Breaking Glass, New Tricks and Rock & Chips. A knight dubbed "The Knight of Kisses" who serves House Velaryon and is the lover of Ser Laenor Velaryon until his death at the hands of Ser Criston Cole. Johnson is also known for his roles in Waking the Dead, Cracker, Holby City, and his role as Dom Andrews in Emmerdale from 2012 to 2014. The English actor is best known for his role as Inspector Slack in Miss Marple. Horovitch's other television roles include Thriller, The New Avengers, Prince Regent, Piece of Cake, Bulman, Hold the Back Page, Boon, Love Hurts, Peak Practice, Foyle's War, The Second Coming, Deceit and Casualty.

Viserys is an ailing king whose nearly 30 years of rule end in complete disaster thanks to his controversial choice of successor. King Viserys' cousin Rhaenys is a Targaryen princess and dragonrider, who married Lord Corlys and has two children with him, Laena and Laenor. She was a contender for the crown following King Jaehaerys' death, and had a stronger claim than Viserys, but since she was a woman she was passed over. She's now known as "the Queen Who Never Was," though her son Laenor can be a serious contender for the throne following Viserys' death.

Viserys' younger brother Daemon is the presumed heir to the throne at the start of the series, though his hostile personality and antics leave him with very few allies at court. He's also a talented warrior and dragonrider, who thinks he'd be a better ruler than his brother. In 2018, Sonoya Mizuno starred in a variety of projects that introduced her to a wider audience that may not have been aware of her before. "We felt like we were making something rare and special," she told The Cut of her experience filming the hit movie.

Considine is known for his roles in films such as 24 Hour Party People, Cinderella Man, Hot Fuzz, The Bourne Ultimatum and The Death of Stalin. On the small screen, he has appeared in Channel 4's Red Riding, ITV's The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, BBC One's Peaky Blinders and Sky's The Third Day. The daughter of Prince Daemon Targaryen and Lady Laena Velaryon.

Considine may be most recognizable to viewers from his collaborations with Edgar Wright. He played DS Andy Wainwright in "Hot Fuzz," and followed it up with a role as Steven Prince in "The World's End." The British filmmaker told That Shelf that he considers the actor part of his filmmaking family. So, when he started writing "The World's End," he kept him in mind. "With Paddy, who was really funny in 'Hot Fuzz,' I just [thought], 'Man, I loved working with Paddy. Let's write another role for Paddy,'" he recalled. "You just don't know what you're gonna get with these characters," she said. "... Such is the human condition. You can do some horrendous things, but then you can also do some wonderful things as well. It's very complex."

The conflict of Alicent and Aegon going against Rhaenyra for the Iron Throne will continue to be central to House of the Dragon in Season 2 as the Dance of the Dragon and a civil war gets underway. In a misunderstanding of Viserys' dying words, which were the Song of Ice and Fire prophecy, Alicent came to believe he was naming their son Aegon as his heir in place of Rhaenyra, spurring her endeavor to crown him king. After House of the Dragon's mid-way time jump, Olivia Cooke took over from Emily Carey as the older Alicent Hightower, now queen of Westeros through her marriage to King Viserys Targaryen. The couple had three children, Aegon, Aemond, and Helaena, but none were named heir to the Iron Throne, with Rhaenyra holding that honor. Although initially Alicent wasn't bothered by this, she became convinced Rhaenyra was plotting against her family, and, as such, conspired to have Aegon named as heir. With a civil war with the rule of Westeros now underway, Smith's Daemon will continue to be a key player in Season 2 as a major participant in the conflict.
